Providence Medical Centers Health Care Leaders in the San Fernando Valley
SAN FERNANDO VALLEY (Oct. 14, 2008) The trio of Providence Medical Centers in the San Fernando Valley was recognized today for its wide range of superior health care programs, including heart and stroke treatment, joint replacement surgeries and care for gastro-intestinal disorders.
Providence Tarzana Medical Center, the newest member of the nonprofit organization, proved stellar in receiving the Stroke Care Excellence Award™ for the sixth consecutive year plus Five-Star ratings for coronary bypass surgery, treatment of heart failure, treatment of stroke and gastrointestinal surgery and procedures.
These stroke care rankings placed Providence Tarzana in the top 5 percent of the 5,000 hospitals across the nation that were evaluated by HealthGrades, the nation's leading health care ratings company, in its 11th annual HealthGrades Hospital Quality in American Study released today.
Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank was recognized by HealthGrades with Five-Star ratings for treatment of heart failure and pulmonary embolism as well as for joint and total knee replacement and appendectomy. Stroke care treatment provided through the hospital's designated Primary Stroke Center was ranked in the top 10 percent in the nation and received the HealthGrades Stroke Care Excellence Award™.
And Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills received an impressive 10 Five-Star rankings across several areas including pulmonary services and gastrointestinal surgeries and procedures, contributing to the hospital's ranking in the top 10 percent in the nation for these areas of care. Treatment of pancreatitis, sepsis and respiratory failure also earned Five-Star ratings.
"These awards validate what the community already knows Providence provides care consistent with the best in the nation," said Dr. Bernard Klein, chief medical officer at Providence Holy Cross. "From our highly regarded trauma center to our nationally recognized nursing team, Providence Holy Cross and all our Providence hospitals in the Valley provide the highest level of patient care."
Providence Tarzana, rated in today's study as the best in the San Fernando Valley Area for bypass surgery and treatment of stroke, joined the Providence family last month and is enjoying a substantial investment in state-of-the-art medical equipment to even further improve diagnostics and treatment.
"It's a testament to our physicians, our nurses and our clinical staff that we have consistently met the highest standards in medical care," said Dale Surowitz, the hospital's chief executive. "And now that we're a part of Providence we're assured this investment in our community's health care needs will continue."
Indeed it's the patients who benefit from the Providence tradition of quality and compassionate care.
Reiko Bradley suffered a sudden hemorrhagic stroke while shopping in the San Fernando Valley and she was rushed unconscious to Providence Saint Joseph.
"My left side went numb and I was having problems breathing. I knew something was terribly wrong," the 47-year-old film distribution executive said. "I was taken to Saint Joe's and they saved my life. I was so fortunate I was taken there."
The Stroke Center at Providence Saint Joseph also was recognized in July as one of the top stroke treatment centers in Southern California by the American Stroke Association in U.S. News and World Report's renowned America's Best Hospitals review. In March, it received the Gold Seal of Approval from the Joint Commission for Advanced Primary Stroke Centers.
