Providence Holy Cross Medical Center Recognized by the State for its Commitment to the Environment
MISSION HILLS (Oct. 29, 2008) So far this year, Providence Holy Cross Medical Center has saved 2,391 trees and diverted 17,608 cubic yards of waste from landfills, earning the Mission Hills hospital kudos from the state of California.
The effort earned Providence Holy Cross the California Integrated Waste Management Board’s 2008 WRAP Waste Reduction Awards Program honors. In fact, the medical center was the only hospital in Southern California to win the recognition and one of just six statewide.
"This is very difficult to do in a hospital because of the measures we must take to control the spread of infection," said John Ramirez, director of facilities and support services. "There are a lot of materials that cannot be recycled for that reason."
Providence Holy Cross Medical Center won the 2005 WRAP honor and each year the criteria have become more stringent..
"Green" policies such as recycling cardboard, plastic, glass, paper and ink cartridges has paid off not only in reducing trash, but in an $11,472 savings, primarily for trash disposal.
"We have a commitment, it seems, from every employee," Ramirez said.
Providence Holy Cross Medical Center is guided by five core values including "stewardship," the value that drives this effort.
A 136-bed expansion under construction at the hospital will be the first LEED-certified "green" hospital building in California built to nationally recognized standards set by Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design to ensure environmentally friendly design.
