Deputy Nabs Suspect Near Junior High School
Friday, January 23, 2009, 8:50 a.m. Newhall Commit Crime? Not in the Santa Clarita Valley A Santa Clarita Valley Station Deputy patrolling around Placerita Junior High, Newhall, arrested a Newhall man for bothering a student while she was walking to school, this morning. The 14-year-old Placerita Junior High School student said that she noticed the man earlier in her walk to school because he seemed to be honking at her. She ignored the unwanted attention and continued to walk to school. As she turned onto Dalby Street from Orchard Village Road, the man in the car turned that way also.
She walked the street toward the school and the man began talking to her from the car. He was driving only as fast as she was walking and he asked her repeatedly to get in his car or if she wanted a ride. She ignored him but became upset by the contact.
At that same time, Deputy Robert Wilkinson, who was patrolling the Newhall area, chose to drive down Dalby Street to check the activity around the local schools. He saw that the man in the car in front of him was making contact with a female pedestrian. There were no obvious signs that something was wrong but he watched what was going on as he drove past. He then saw that the girl was crying and she made a hand motion indicating that something was wrong. Deputy Wilkinson stopped the driver and after investigating, arrested him for the misdemeanor charge of Annoying Children.
The suspect is a 31-year-old male. He was driving a late model burgundy Honda Accord. Detectives are not releasing his name or photo in order not to compromise any similar cases which have not yet been reported. Detectives request that anyone who may have been approached by this suspect to call Santa Clarita Sheriff's Detective Richard Welch at (661) 799-5131. The investigation is ongoing and there is no further information available at this time. -ref 01419
