Resident's Hunch, Deputies, and Text Messages Net Burglary Suspect
Tuesday, February 03, 2009, 9:31 p.m. Valencia:
Commit Crime? Not in the Santa Clarita Valley Deputies responded to the 24200 block of Kirby Court, Valencia, Tuesday night to a resident's report that they saw a suspicious person walking out of their neighbor's backyard. When deputies arrived they checked the address given by the concerned resident and found that someone had broken into the house. Several deputies converged on the area and the alert resident provided a description of the suspect. Deputies immediately broadcast the information to all responding personnel. The deputies also determined that two other residential burglaries had occurred earlier in the evening in the 24200 block of Cabrillo Lane, Valencia. The suspect apparently gained entry into the houses by using a rock to break a window.
Deputies, who were scouring the area, spotted a suspect on Decoro Drive near Mcbean Parkway who matched the description given by the witness. Deputies conducted additional investigation and reportedly determined the man, Jay Blehm, MW/18, a nearby Valencia resident, was directly connected to the burglaries. In addition to other supporting factors, deputies allegedly found text messages sent from the suspect's phone to other individuals describing several items he was trying to sell. Many of the item descriptions typed into the phone matched those of the items taken in the burglaries.
Blehm was booked at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station on felony burglary charges. He is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail pending future court proceedings.
The investigation is ongoing and there is no further information at this time. Anyone with information regarding this suspect or this case is asked to immediately contact the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station at (661) 255-1121 or report tips anonymously as indicated below. -ref 02215/02219/02221
