12-Year-Old Behind Bars After Stealing Car
Friday, March 06, 2009, 10:00 a.m. Canyon Country:
A 12-year-old Canyon Country resident is behind bars today after reportedly being directly involved with several criminal incidents in Santa Clarita, dating back to July 2008.
Deputies responded to a call in the 26000 block of Claudette Street, Canyon Country today, where a woman reported her car was just stolen. The woman said she had left the car running while she was taking items into her apartment. She noticed a young man watching her, but didn't think much of it. When she returned to her driveway after taking items into the apartment, she saw the same juvenile driving away in her car. She immediately called the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station and deputies quickly responded.
Based on the suspect description, and other recent crimes in the area, patrol deputies were able to identify a possible suspect and were aware of areas that the juvenile was known to frequent. Other deputies responded to that area, an apartment complex located on Solamint Road, Canyon Country. Just minutes later, one of the deputies spotted the stolen vehicle, a 2001 Honda Accord, being driven by the juvenile inside the parking area of the complex at the 27000 Block of Solamint Road. Deputies noticed there was now a 12-year-old male passenger in the car as well. The driver immediately stopped when he saw the deputy and ran from the vehicle, but the passenger was detained without incident. Deputies established a containment of the area and an alert witness told the deputies he had just seen a juvenile matching the description get on a public bus several blocks away on Soledad Canyon Road. Deputies located the bus traveling westbound on Soledad Canyon Road and conducted a traffic stop near Langside Drive. The subject was located on the bus and was taken into custody without incident. The passenger, who was detained in the stolen car, was later released to his parents without charges.
It turns out the juvenile, MB/12 of Canyon Country, may be no stranger to crime. Detectives from the City of Santa Clarita / Sheriff's COBRA Team report that he was involved in a petty theft of a wallet on July 25, 2008 at the Pet Stop Store in the 16500 block of Soledad Canyon Road, Canyon Country (-ref 08-13358). He is a named subject in a grand theft of currency and a cell phone that occurred on December 29, 2008 (-ref 09-00120), at the Hot Topic business in the 24200 Valencia Boulevard, Valencia, for which he was arrested, cited, and released to his parents. He was detained and cited by deputies on a truancy violation in February 2009 (-ref 02618), and was a named subject in two burglary cases just 18 days later. One case at Jersey Mike's in the 18600 block of Soledad Canyon Road, Canyon Country, where a tip-jar containing currency was stolen (-ref 03803). The second, just hours later, at the Sunshine Liquor Store in the 16400 block of Delone Street, Canyon Country, during which cigarettes were stolen (-ref 03801). Each of the 2009 cases are still pending court proceedings.
Today's incident (-ref 04128), which escalated to vehicle theft, has landed the juvenile behind bars at Sylmar Juvenile Hall where he is being held without bail pending future court proceedings.
