A deputy from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station was honored Monday night for his outstanding service to the community throughout 2008. The Santa Clarita Elks Lodge #2379 held their annual Community Service Awards night on Monday, March 9th, 2009, and announced Deputy Lucas Darland as their selection.
Deputy Darland, an eight-year veteran of the department, was assigned to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station in March of 2005. Lucas has made a positive impact on the community ever since. He was promoted to Field Training Officer thirteen months ago and has trained several newly assigned deputies, instilling in them the same positive attitude he projects daily.
Throughout 2008, Deputy Darland clearly demonstrated his vast knowledge of the law, his unique ability to positively influence those around him, and his proactive approach to protecting our great community. In 2008 Deputy Darland made 317 arrests in Santa Clarita; including one of out-of-state drug traffickers who had a large quantity of marijuana secreted in their vehicle. Recently, he detained a local gang member for questioning regarding several vandalism incidents. That detention ultimately led to a search warrant operation. The operation resulted in the recovery of a gun, stolen property, and the arrest of a second gang member believed to be responsible for three armed robberies. Deputy Darland was also named as the station's October 2008 Employee of the Month.
"This deputy projects such a positive influence on all those around him," said Captain La Berge. "He always has a smile on his face and just has a knack for tracking down the bad guys," he added.
Congratulations Deputy Darland! Thank you for making Santa Clarita such a great and safe place to live, work, and play.
