Fungi Farmers Foiled
Thursday, March 12, 2009, 4:00 am Canyon Country
Deputies responded to an early morning call of a family disturbance and possible shots fired in the 27900 block of Solamint Road, Canyon Country. When they arrived and began investigating, they found more than just a family argument. Inside the apartment was a sophisticated hallucinogenic mushroom farm. The grow was large, with fifteen growing containers, twenty-one start-up jars and eight trays of finished product. Two people at the apartment, Arfana Hubbard, F/19 year old, resident of Saugus, and David Dunnell, M/26 year old, resident of Canyon country were arrested for Possession of a Controlled Substance for Sales. They are both being held at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station in lieu of $100,000 bail.
The hallucinogenic substance is considered a bio-hazard and a hazardous material requiring a specialized clean up. Los Angeles County Fire Department Hazardous Materials Team, Los Angeles County Crime Lab and a specially trained Drug Lab Crew responded to the location to assist in the processing and clean up of the substance. A street value has not yet been estimated. This is considered a significant seizure of hallucinogenic mushrooms.
Deputies found no evidence that any shots were fired during the argument and have concluded that it might have been a door slamming which was heard by neighbors.
The investigation is ongoing and there is no further information available at this time. -ref 04456
