Deputy Attacked While Trying to Help
Saturday, July 19, 2008 5:00 p.m. Canyon Country: A deputy from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station was attacked Saturday afternoon as he attempted to render aid to a man who appeared to be unconscious. The deputy was patrolling in the area of Sierra Highway and Sandy Drive, Canyon Country, when he spotted a man who appeared to be unconscious lying on the ground in the wash area.
As the deputy approached, he saw the man was bleeding from a contusion on his forehead. The deputy called for paramedics and tapped the man on the shoulder in an attempt to wake him up. The deputy reports that the man immediately jumped up and attempted to throw multiple punches at him while yelling expletives. The deputy instructed the man to get back on the ground, but the man refused to comply, picked up a wooden stick and began swinging it at the deputy. The deputy was able to avoid being struck or seriously injured and managed to take the man into custody. Deputies have not determined why the man attacked, why he was in the wash, or how he sustained the abrasion on his head, as he was very uncooperative.
The man, Alfredo Gonzales, MH/21, of Texas now faces felony charges of Assault with a Deadly Weapon on a Peace Officer. He was booked at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station and is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail. The investigation is ongoing and there is no further information available at this time. -ref 12784
