Standoff Ends in Arrest
Monday, July 21, 2008 10:30 p.m. Newhall: A Newhall teen, MH/17, was arrested early Tuesday morning following a standoff with deputies which lasted nearly two hours. Deputies responded to a residence in 25000 block of Walnut Street after a man called the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station and asked for help, stating his son was acting crazy. When deputies arrived they found several occupants fleeing from the windows and doors at the location and stating that the subject had a knife.
The teen was apparently chasing family members around the house with a knife and threatening them. When deputies arrived, the subject barricaded himself inside the house by stacking furniture and mattresses against the doors and windows. Deputies evacuated other nearby dwellings and gave the subject repeated commands to give up. Deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department Special Enforcement Bureau's Canine Services Detail and Crisis Negotiations Team where requested and responded to the scene.
After several more request and announcements from deputies, the subject surrendered without incident just after midnight. Deputies found that the subject had allegedly caused extensive damage to the interior of the house breaking furniture, damaging walls, and knocking over a candle causing a small fire. No one was injured during the incident.
The subject was booked at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station on felony charges of Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Vandalism. He also faces potential misdemeanor charges of Resisting, Delaying or Obstructing a Peace Officer. He was later transported to Sylmar Juvenile Hall for housing pending future court proceedings. The investigation is ongoing and there is no further information available at this time. -ref 12930
