Paseo Patrol Nets Teens with Alcohol
Friday, August 22, 2008, 8:00 p.m. City of Santa Clarita Valencia
One of the most common complaints the station receives is that teenagers are causing a nuisance to other citizens by participating in unsafe and illegal behaviors such as: drinking, graffiti, illegal drug use, fighting, littering and causing noise disturbances.
In order to address some of these nuisance issues, the Community Intervention Team (C.I.T.) conducted a bicycle patrol operation on Friday, August 22, 2008. The operation was quite successful in locating criminal activity. In total, fourteen arrests were made. Early in the operation, deputies contacted John Pacheco, M/51, regarding his possession of an open alcohol container on the paseo east of McBean Parkway, between Arroyo Parkway and Del Monte Drive. During the contact, deputies discovered that Pacheco was listed as a Parolee at Large. He was arrested on that warrant and additionally cited for having an open container of alcohol in public.
In the same area, Del Monte Drive and McBean Parkway, a 16 year-old was cited for possession of alcohol.
At 11:30 p.m., eight teenagers were arrested for curfew and minor in possession of alcohol in the paseo area west of Riversbridge Way, Valencia. A 19 year-old at the same location was also cited for possession of alcohol. Neighbors in the area had complained of the disturbing activities but deputies had previously been unable to catch the teens.
Late that night, the deputies on bike patrol heard a car alarm sound in the area of Bridgeport Lane and McBean Parkway. They then saw four BMX bicycle riders leaving the area. They were all contacted during the subsequent investigation.
The burglary investigation revealed that the riders had kicked the side of a vehicle, causing the vehicles alarm to sound, but there had not been a burglary, nor did there appear to be any damage to the vehicle. The riders were then released in the field.
There is a curfew law in both the City of Santa Clarita and the Unincorporated County areas. The curfew ordinance prohibits teens under the age of 18 from hanging out on the paseo and other public areas after 10 pm. More bicycle patrols are planned in the future.
The investigation is ongoing and there is no further information available at this time. -ref 14902, 14909
