Assault Suspect Arrested After Pursuit
Wednesday, December 10, 2008, 6:09 p.m. Canyon Country: Detectives from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station are investigating an assault incident that occurred in the 28000 block of Dune Court, Canyon Country, Wednesday night. Deputies were called to the location after reports of a family dispute and a man chasing his brother with a knife. Deputies learned that the suspect, Javier Ortega, MH/19, had gotten into a verbal dispute with his mother regarding a car and when the suspect's younger brother, MH/16, intervened the two began fighting. At some point during the fight, the suspect allegedly threatened to kill his brother and retrieved a knife from the kitchen. The younger brother ran away and when deputies arrived the suspect had fled the area in a vehicle.
Deputies began searching for the vehicle and located it near Sierra Highway and Soledad Canyon Road. When they attempted to conduct a traffic stop the suspect fled and a vehicle pursuit was initiated. The pursuit continued for several minutes covering Santa Clarita surface streets before the suspect yielded and was taken into custody without incident on westbound Soledad Canyon Road near Golden Oak Road. No one was injured during the incident. Deputies report that they also found marijuana in the suspect's possession.
The suspect was booked at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station on felony charges of Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Possession of Marijuana for Sales, and Evading a Peace Officer. He is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail pending future court proceedings.
The investigation is ongoing and there is no further information available at this time. -ref 21958
