Santa Clarita, CA. Seats on the governing board of a school district allow citizens to participate in one of the
most unique and direct forms of American democracy. School board members are the
only elected officials charged with a single responsibility – the education of the district's
students. The Governing Board of the Newhall School District is made up of five elected
officials who represent the public in this effort. They set district policy, monitor
business and instructional programs, and hold staff accountable for the conduct of district
affairs.
An election for three seats on the Governing Board of the Newhall School District will be
held on November 3, 2009. The seats that will appear on the ballot are held by
incumbents Bob Jensen, Mike McGrath, and Steve Tannehill. Incumbent board member
McGrath intends to run for re-election. Jensen has announced his campaign for the Hart
High School District board and will not be running for re-election to the Newhall board.
Residents who live within the boundaries of the Newhall School District are eligible
candidates. Those interested in finding out more about the responsibilities and demands
of the position are encouraged to speak with one of the current board members or Marc
Winger, Superintendent. The district phone number is 291.4000 and e mail addresses for
board members and the superintendent can be found on the district's website at
www.newhallschooldistrict.net.
Board members serve a four year term if they win the district-wide election which takes
place on a ballot with other municipal, state and federal elections. The filing period for
declaring candidacy in the November election is July 13th through August 7th. Filing
information and papers are available from the Los Angeles County Registrar-
Recorder/County Clerk at www.lavote.net.
