Unique Situation After Election Results in Open Board Seat
Current NSD Board to Appoint a New Member
Santa Clarita, CA The results of the November 3rd election will cause the Newhall School District to conduct an appointment process for a new Board member. J. Michael McGrath, Jr. won re-election to the Newhall board even though he stated prior to the election that he would be unable to serve. He will submit a resignation effective December 8th, creating the open seat. According to Education Code, resignations must be filled either by special election or by appointment by the governing board. The Newhall board chose not to conduct a costly special election.
The current board will conduct a process to appoint the new member. An appointed member serves until the next regularly scheduled election which will occur in November 2011. The appointed member will join Phil Ellis and Christy Smith who won the Newhall Board election yesterday, and Mike Shapiro and Suzan Solomon, who are the middle of four year terms on the board.
The appointment process starts with applications from any interested district resident who is a registered voter. A board member may not be an employee of the district at the time of the appointment. Application directions are available from the Newhall School District and can be found on their website at www.newhallschooldistrict.net. Applications are due to the district by noon on November 20th. Interviews of potential candidates will take place on December 1st and the newly appointed Board member will be sworn in and seated at the December 8th meeting of the Newhall Governing Board.
