Special Weather Statement Santa Clarita Valley (California)
420 AM PDT TUE APR 7 2009
...A SERIES OF PACIFIC STORMS WILL BRING MUCH COOLER AND WET
WEATHER FOR THE REST OF THE WEEK...
A STORM SYSTEM ABOUT 400 MILES WEST OF THE CENTRAL CALIFORNIA COAST
WILL MOVE SLOWLY EASTWARD TODAY. A WEAK FRONT WRAPPED AROUND THE LOW
PRESSURE CENTER ALONG WITH A 120 KNOT JET ALOFT WILL BRING AN
ORGANIZED BAND OF PRECIPITATION TOWARD SHORE THIS MORNING. THIS BAND
WILL LIKELY BRING RAIN FIRST TO SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY BY MID
MORNING...MOVING DOWN THE COAST AND INTO LOS ANGELES COUNTY BY THE
EVENING. AS THE INITIAL BAND PASSES TO THE EAST...COLDER AIR
ASSOCIATED WITH THE CORE OF THE LOW PRESSURE CENTER WILL MOVE OVER
THE AREA TONIGHT AND INTO WEDNESDAY. THIS COLD AIR ALOFT WILL BRING
A CHANCE OF INSTABILITY SHOWERS THAT COULD BECOME THUNDERSTORMS.
RAINFALL RATES COULD BE MODERATE AT TIMES...ESPECIALLY OVER SAN LUIS
OBISPO AND SANTA BARBARA COUNTIES...AS WELL AS UNDER ANY
THUNDERSTORMS. TOTAL RAINFALL ACCUMULATIONS THROUGH WEDNESDAY ARE
EXPECTED TO RANGE FROM A ABOUT A HALF TO AN INCH OVER SAN LUIS
OBISPO AND SANTA BARBARA COUNTIES...AND BETWEEN ABOUT ONE QUARTER TO
ON HALF OF AN INCH OVER VENTURA AND LOS ANGELES COUNTIES. BECAUSE
THERE WILL BE SOME SOUTHERLY COMPONENT TO THE FLOW...THE FAVORABLY
ORIENTED MOUNTAIN AND FOOTHILL LOCATIONS COULD SEE HIGHER AMOUNTS.
SNOW LEVELS WILL NOT BE VERY LOW WITH THE BULK OF THE
PRECIPITATION...AND SHOULD BE BETWEEN 6000 AND 7000 FEET TODAY...
LOWERING TO 4500 TO 5500 FEET ON WEDNESDAY. AS A RESULT...SNOWFALL
ACCUMULATIONS ARE GENERALLY NOT EXPECTED TO EXCEED A FEW INCHES.
DUE TO THE LACK OF VERY COLD AIR...THE STRONG UPPER LEVEL WINDS
ARE NOT EXPECTED TO DESCEND MUCH BELOW THE MOUNTAIN PEAKS. LOW
LEVEL PRESSURE GRADIENTS WILL HOWEVER PRODUCE SOME BREEZY
SOUTHERLY WINDS ALONG THE MOUNTAINS AND DESERTS...BUT GUSTS
SHOULD MOSTLY BE BELOW ANY ADVISORY STRENGTHS.
THURSDAY WILL BRING A BREAK IN THE WEATHER AND THEN ANOTHER STORM
SYSTEM WILL MOVE THROUGH THE AREA THURSDAY NIGHT AND FRIDAY. THIS
STORM HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BRING LOWER SNOW LEVELS THAN THIS FIRST
STORM.
