Temps Could Push Close to 110 Sunday
750 PM PDT WED JUL 22 2009
HOT TEMPERATURES EXPECTED ONCE AGAIN FRIDAY INTO NEXT WEEK ...
STRONG HIGH PRESSURE ALOFT WILL SLIDE TO THE EAST THROUGH
THURSDAY ... PROVIDING A SMALL AMOUNT OF RELIEF TO THE REGION FROM
THE HOT TEMPERATURES EXPERIENCED EARLIER THIS WEEK. THIS RELIEF WILL
BE SHORT LIVED HOWEVER ... AS THE HIGH PRESSURE SYSTEM IS EXPECTED TO
BUILD WESTWARD TOWARDS SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA BEGINNING ON FRIDAY ...
WITH FURTHER STRENGTHENING OVER THE WEEKEND.
ONCE THIS HIGH SLIDES BACK TO THE WEST ... HOT TEMPERATURES SIMILAR
TO THIS LAST WEEKEND SHOULD RETURN TO SOUTHERN AND CENTRAL
CALIFORNIA. THIS MEANS WIDESPREAD VALLEY AND MOUNTAIN TEMPERATURES
BETWEEN 95 AND 105 DEGREES ARE EXPECTED ONCE AGAIN. A FEW SITES MAY
PUSH CLOSE TO 110 DEGREES DURING THE PEAK OF THIS EVENT ON SUNDAY
AND MONDAY ... ESPECIALLY IN THE ANTELOPE VALLEY. COASTAL AREAS WILL
REMAIN MILD HOWEVER ... AS A SHALLOW MARINE WILL PERSIST INTO NEXT
WEEK.
THERE WILL ALSO BE A SMALL INCREASE IN HUMIDITIES ... WHICH WHEN
COMBINED WITH THE HOT TEMPERATURES ... MAY DRIVE HEAT INDEX VALUES
ABOVE CRITICAL LEVELS. THE AREAS MOST THREATENED WITH THESE
CONDITIONS ARE THE LOWER ELEVATIONS OF THE INTERIOR MOUNTAIN
RANGES ... AS WELL AS THE INTERIOR VALLEYS OF SAN LUIS OBISPO AND
SANTA BARBARA COUNTIES. THE HEAT INDEX IS A MEASURE OF DISCOMFORT
LEVEL BASED ON A COMBINATION OF TEMPERATURE AND HUMIDITY.
THIS LONG DURATION HEAT WAVE AFFECTING INLAND AREAS OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
CAN BE DANGEROUS FOR ANYONE ... ESPECIALLY FOR THE ELDERLY ... SMALL
CHILDREN ... AND PETS. IF YOU PLAN ON BEING OUTDOORS ... REMEMBER TO
REMAIN HYDRATED BY DRINKING PLENTY OF WATER ... WEAR LOOSE-FITTING
CLOTHING AND A HAT ... AND REMAIN IN THE SHADE OR INDOORS AS MUCH AS
POSSIBLE.
NEVER LEAVE CHILDREN OR PETS IN CARS WITH THE WINDOWS UP OR
CRACKED DURING THE DAY ... EVEN FOR A VERY SHORT TIME ... AS
TEMPERATURES CAN QUICKLY REACH LETHAL LEVELS.
