25th Annual Teacher Tribute 2009
"A Celebration of Dedication"
On April 30, 2009, the Santa Clarita Valley (SCV) Education Foundation will host the 25th Anniversary Teacher Tribute. We will honor 54 exemplary teachers, one from each school, who were selected by their peers for providing excellent classroom instruction and leadership. Our schools in the Santa Clarita Valley continue to be considered in the top echelon of public schools in California, due in most part to the critical role our teachers play.
The event will be held at The COC Performing Arts Center on the College of the Canyons campus at 26455 Rockwell Canyon Road in Valencia on Thursday, April 30, 2009. Refreshments will begin, at 5:00 p.m. followed by the program at 6:30 p.m., which will include entertainment and speakers from local schools. We are pleased to have as special speaker, original Freedom Writer, Mauricio (Tony) Becerra for this momentous occasion.
Tony will be visiting Bowman High School from 11:30 to 3:00 to share his experiences growing up and overcoming the odds against him, as a Freedom Writer and the difference a teacher , Erin Gruwell, made in his life.
The SCV Education Foundation began as an Education Committee for the Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce in 1984 to develop partnerships between local businesses and public schools. In order to focus solely on education and increase support for our programs the Education Committee decided to form a foundation. In 1995 the SCV Education Foundation qualified as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable Foundation.
Through our Student Enrichment Awards, we have given $450,000 in grants to teachers for a variety of school projects that include computer software, science equipment and the arts. Our other programs are READ WITH ME! is a volunteer based service that works with children on reading skills in low-income schools and scholarships that are given to high school seniors going into the educational field. We recently hosted our 17th annual Principal for a Day, which pairs business leaders with educators at all SCV public schools. And the Santa Clarita Literacy & Arts Festival to promote, encourage and expose families to the importance of reading and the performing arts for a well-rounded education.
Teacher Tribute is open to the public. Proceeds from this event support our programs and services.
