Local Educators Join Pink Friday
Teachers across California will be wearing pink on Friday, March 13, 2009 to acknowledge the state budget cuts to education. Teachers and administrators from the five Santa Clarita school districts will be demonstrating at nine major intersections to show support for education funding. As of March 6, more than 19,000 pink slips have been issued to teachers across California. It is estimated that by Friday's deadline more than 23,000 teachers in the state will be given layoff notices.
Budget cuts will also cause an increase in class sizes, a loss of support staff, a loss of buses and other important education programs. California is last in the nation for per pupil funding and Santa Clarita schools are the lowest funded schools in the state. That makes Santa Clarita schools dead last for funding.
