Historian Questions Date of Placerita Gold Discovery

worry, it might be even earlier than we think.) At SCVHistory.com we
like documents. Birth certificates, death certificates, photographic
evidence, that sort of thing. If there's no document, it's legend. We
know the legend of Francisco Lopez napping under the oak tree because a
descendant said she remembered where it happened ... 70 years after the
fact. It's not like Lopez snapped a selfie and posted it on Facebook
that day. Now here's a guy who insists - 54 years later - that he saw
the gold in 1841. (The accepted date is 1842.) Whatever. There's a
document, signed and dated by the governor April 4, 1842, that
establishes the Lopez discovery as California's first "documented" gold
