Tresierras Quits Newhall
After
nearly 33 years in Newhall, Tresierras Market closed Sunday night,
according to Arturo Tresierras, co-owner of the Latino grocery chain.
"The downtown Newhall area is transitioning more to a restaurant type
of area," he said, "and supermarkets require vast parking lots and the
area is no longer conducive to that." |

Two Grocery Stores in Same Newhall Block
When
Newhall was set up at its current location in 1878, the first building
was a grocery store. In the 1880s, J.O. Newhall, a younger relative of
Henry, opened a second grocery store in the same block. Safeway came
along sometime before 1935 (where you see M&N Market in this 1948
photo). Safeway did so well that it put a rival out of business, and by
1941 it had built a bigger, 4,000-square-foot store down the street
(where you see Safeway). Around 1948 the rival M&N Market moved into
Safeway's original space. And then came Valencia. M&N quietly went
away (today the location is Jazmin's Bakery). Safeway left the moment
Valencia opened in 1965. Dillenbeck replaced Safeway; in 1981 Tresierras
moved in. And then there were none. |
