Blast from the Past: Oil and Demon Rum
| A
founder of the aforementioned Newhall Presbyterian Church was Henry
Clay Needham, who came out from Kansas where he had authored that
state's dry law. A fervent prohibitionist, when he arrived in 1888,
Newhall's saloons far outnumbered its churches; ultimately his plan to
turn Newhall into a dry colony failed. He had somewhat more success with
oil exploration on his property, which stretched from Sierra Highway to
Pine Street. It included what's now Eternal Valley Cemetery and the
future Gate-King Industrial Park, being developed by the descendants of
the folks who founded Eternal Valley in 1958. |
