| New Old Stuff: Fifth Columnists in Castaic
 FBI
Director J. Edgar Hoover wasted no time in carrying out President
Roosevelt's order to arrest Japanese citizens age 14 and older along the
West Coast after the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. By the end
of the evening of the 7th, Hoover's L.A. field agents alone had
arrested 90 Japanese citizens. But Hoover didn't limit his scope to
Hirohito's subjects. His men had been compiling lists of fifth
columnists all year - Japanese, German, Italian - and they were ready to
go. So they went. On the morning of the 8th, they arrested 20 German
citizens and were targeting 58 more. That night, two people on the list,
a mother and son in Castaic, were arrested by local sheriff's deputies
at the FBI's behest. The dad was arrested separately, probably earlier
that evening. The FBI detained them as enemy aliens - although you could
split hairs and say technically, they weren't. You see, no formal state
of war existed between the United States and Germany until three days
later.
