William S. Hart was the first big Western movie star, and really the
first big movie star in any genre. His place in history was secure by
the time his 1925 film, "Tumbleweeds," was re-released in 1939 (as seen
here). Between those two points, 1925 and 1939, Hart battled the
studios. The studios wanted "blood and thunder;" Hart wanted to keep it
real. The studios won. "Tumbleweeds" was the last movie he'd ever make. |
