New Old Stuff: Desert Mining
Gold was a big deal in the pre-Newhall area in the 1840s when Lopez found it, but the rush was short-lived. Most of the local gold was fairly quickly removed. By the 1860s, miners were having better luck in the Agua Dulce and Acton areas. Boom towns sprouted in the 1890s when new discoveries were made deeper into the Mojave Desert in places like Rosamond. One of the richest finds was at Randsburg (shown), about 40 miles past the town of Mojave. This 1949 photograph of the 10-stamp Butte Lode mill (ore crusher) at Randsburg came to us Monday. As it happens, we photographed the ghostly remnants of the same mill from exactly the same vantage point last year.
