Hero Girl from Castaic Saves 3 Army Aviators
| Nine-year-old
Marylynn Winkler hiked 5 miles from her Romero Canyon home to find
three badly injured Army aviators who parachuted from their modified
DC-3 transport plane when it broke up in mid-air. Marylynn stayed with
them for hours, building a fire to keep them warm (it was late January
in 1943) and caring for them until rescue personnel arrived later that
night. For her heroics, Marylynn received a commendation from Gen. Hap
Arnold, appeared on Gene Autry's radio program and was celebrated in a
nationally syndicated Sunday comic strip. In 2012, Marylynn - now
Marylynn Butters - revisited the crash site with one of the men she
saved.
