New Old Stuff: The Long Road to The Autry
Today the Autry National Center is a jewel in Griffith Park. It was originally going to be in Placerita Canyon. Gene Autry and his first wife, Ina, intended to build a Western history museum on their Melody Ranch property, but Gene was so disillusioned after the 1962 fire that he let the idea go. Ina died in 1980; the following year he married his second wife, Jackie (shown), who took the reins of the Autry Foundation and ramrodded the museum building effort. She set her sights on Burbank, but the residents there didn't want it, and she pulled the plug in 1985. Three years later The Autry opened across from the L.A. Zoo as the Gene Autry Museum of Western Heritage. It took over the Southwest Museum of the American Indian in 2004.
