Blast from the Past: Last of the Clintons
Ironic
title for a movie today; not so much in 1935 when it was new. Harry
Carey was 56 and living in Saugus when he signed to star in a series of
action-packed B-Westerns for Poverty Row producer William Berke. As one
biographer put it, he "brought maturity to the films (and) made
oaters better by his presence." Shortly before Carey died in 1947, he
sold his Saugus property to the Farmer John meat packing family. With a
developer partner, they turned it into Tesoro del Valle. Carey's second
home has been preserved and is maintained by the L.A. County Parks
Department. Unlike other buildings on his property, his original
homestead house wasn't lost to the St. Francis Dam Disaster of 1928;
rather, it burned down in 1932. |
