Blast from the Past: Aircraft Down
Small by today's standards, com­mercial airliners fell out of the sky with seeming regularity in the 1930s, often because pilots mis­judged the peaks south of Newhall in the fog and snow. Yes, snow. That's the white stuff on the ground in this photo of a probable survivor being transported down the moun­tain, some 16 or so hours after the crash. It took rescuers a while to find the plane. Five of the 13 people (a full load) on board Western Air Express Flight 7 out of Salt Lake City perished. How so many survived after being stranded for so long is a wonder.
