 Desert Candles | Dianne Erskine-HellrigelThis
is my favorite desert flower, and it is one of hundreds of spring
flowers that fill the desert floor with beauty. You can see these if you
ever get off the freeway and take a little bit of time to explore the
wonderful things that local desert has to offer. |

Blast from the Past, Or More Particularly, the Internet
In
the old days, the Historical Society would receive maybe one "new" old
item per month. Now that everything and everyone is only a mouse click
away, there's a steady stream. There used to be one known document
relating to Henry M. Newhall's railroad. Now there are two. A man in
Florida was searching for information about a curious receipt he found
inside an old German Bible he purchased; he found the one we had on
SCVHistory.com and sent photos of his discovery.
Short story
about the railroad: Henry opened it in 1864, sold it to the Southern
Pacific in 1870, made a bunch of money, bought land up and down
California including the western half of the Santa Clarita Valley, and
his heirs formed the company that developed Valencia.
Even shorter story about quicksilver: It's mercury. It was used to separate gold and silver from the host rock. |
