You know what's missing from Santa
Clarita this month? A big rodeo. Today Santa Clarita hosts a big bicycle
race, and that's great. But from the mid-1920s to the 1940s, late
April-early May was rodeo season. Santa Clarita - or rather, Saugus -
hosted a great, big rodeo in an arena that sat 18,000, and it tended to
draw an overflow crowd. Yep. In a community of no more than 4,000
residents. In this 1932 photograph, it was the Hoot Gibson Ranch Rodeo.
Hoot was a popular matinee idol who brought his Hollywood pals to the
rodeo. He had visions of upgrading it to the level of the Pendleton
Round-Up or Calgary Stampede. It never quite made it ... and then the
Great Flood of March 1938 wiped it out. Bill Bonelli bought the rodeo
grounds from the bank. He continued the annual tradition for a number of
years but eventually turned it into the Saugus Speedway. Folks today
know it as the Saugus Swap Meet. Time will tell what it becomes next.
