New Old Stuff: Hear Me...
"Roar"
(1981) was a family affair and a series of disasters. The brainchild of
actress Tippi Hedren ("The Birds," "Marnie") and then-husband Noel
Marshall (exec. producer, "The Exorcist"), the nature film was made in
Acton at Africa USA, which Tippi later renamed Shambala. It took 11
years to make, lost about $15 million, and Tippi, Noel, and Tippi's
daughter Melanie Griffith were mauled along the way. Melanie is seen
here at upper left, Tippi at the door. This photo was shot in 1977 -
shortly before production was dealt a multi-year setback as a result of
major flooding in 1978 that washed away the movie sets and killed three
of the lions including the alpha male, Robbie. |
