'Blast' from the Past: Nike Missiles and More... | Push
a button at Magic Mountain (the mountain south of Newhall, not the
amusement park in Valencia), and a battery of Nike missiles would blast
off from the hills near the old Lang Depot, south of today's 14 Freeway
at Shadow Pines. The idea was, they'd intercept the invading Soviet
warplanes. To our knowledge, they didn't. Decades later, in '94, the
DTSC - the state's toxic cleanup agency - was interested, but the
Pentagon said the feds would take care of any leftover hazardous
materials. To our knowledge, they haven't. But DTSC had other business
to deal with in the area. (If you thought Whittaker-Bermite was the only
DTSC cleanup site in town, think again. There are plenty of sites
in the SCV, and one's next door to the old missile silo.) From the
1950s to 1989, the dark blue dot in the upper right-hand corner of the
map was a facility that used various chemicals to recycle old oil for
resale. It left all sorts of nasty stuff in the soil and groundwater,
right next to the Santa Clara River. We'd like to tell you it's all
clean now. To our knowledge, it isn't. |
