Saugus Flyboys
Pioneer aviators frequently came to the Newhall-Saugus area to test their aircraft. One was Luckly Lindy. Another was Hawley Bowlus, an important early expert and the man who actually was in charge of building Lindbergh's Spirit of St. Louis in 1927.

Here, a panicky aviation writer takes his first solo glider flight in a Bowlus sailplane - with a little help form Bowlus himself - at the Saugus Airport in 1941. It was later called the Newhall Airport. Today it's Valencia; it was roughly between Granary Square and K-Mart.

It's a beautiful glider; follow the link to read the story and see what it looks like today.
