New Old Stuff: Wiley Wine
Wine making was really big business in Los Angeles County. In fact, in the early 1870s, folks thought wine would be L.A.'s ticket to prosperity. (By the 1880s, it was oil and oranges.) A big grape grower locally was Frank LaSalle. He immigrated from France in 1890 and set up a ranch in Wiley Canyon, about where I-5 and Calgrove Boulevard meet today. His ranch still looked this way in 1963, when this photo was shot, long after Frank was gone. That's his old wine cellar at right.
