New Old Stuff: Valiant Servant to City, County, Country Born in Madagascar in 1924 to a family of Lutheran missionaries, George Ludvig Pederson served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. In 1954 he joined the L.A. County Sheriff's Department, retiring as commander of the Pitchess jail complex in 1984. An early promoter of cityhood, he served on the City Council from 1992-96 and was affectionately known as Santa Clarita's "earthquake mayor" in 1994, when the SCV was devastated by the Northridge earthquake. An ardent community volunteer, he was named SCV Man of the Year in 1997. George Pederson died May 9. His life was celebrated this past Saturday at Christ Lutheran Church in Valencia. |
