Blast from the Past: Acton to Newhall and Back Again Bertha
and Emma Blum were two of the six children of 19th-century Acton
ranchers George and Magdalena Blum. In 1936-37, Bertha and Emma taught
third and fourth grade at Newhall School. Emma stayed in the education
field, teaching in Lancaster before retiring to Acton. In her later
years she grew into a town historian, collecting photographs and stories
from the area - just as A.B. Perkins was doing the same thing in
Newhall and Saugus. Their paths collided in Soledad Canyon, so they
decided to share resources. As a result of this teamwork, a number of
the "Acton" images that are on SCVHistory.com today were originally
collected by Emma Blum.
