Blast from the Past, Through to the Present It
no longer stands, but this adobe home was built in the 1860s east of
Acton and south of Littlerock by Santiago Garcia, the earliest
identifiable common ancestor of modern families with Tataviam Indian
heritage. Born about 1833, Santiago was killed 40 years later by a
grizzly bear in the canyon that now bears his name (Santiago Canyon,
where Acton is). The traditions that can be traced back to Santiago have
been handed down in an unbroken line to Ted Garcia Jr., who now holds
the title of chief, or family patriarch. Ted inherited the mantle from
the late Charlie Cooke, who for 50 years championed Indian causes and
rights in Ventura and northern Los Angeles County while living,
appropriately enough, on Santiago Road in Acton.
