Blast from the Past: Fire in the Hole While the silver-lead ingots were hauled down the mountain and across the lake en route
to Los Angeles via Soledad Canyon, charcoal from these kilns on the
shore of Owens Lake went the other direction to fire the smelters. The
year was 1873 and the influx of new wealth in silver enabled Los Angeles
to grow into a city with multistory buildings. Tiburcio Vasquez and his
gang occasionally robbed the freighters who stopped at places like
Lang, but not for long; Tiburcio was captured in 1874 and hanged in
1875. After Los Angeles had its fill of silver, it came back in the
early 1900s and took the water. The Owens Valley ain't what it used to
be.
