What used to be the remaining half of the 100-year-old, two-story wooden Newhall School building next to Jimmy Dean's is gone. Historical Society officers - including Santa Clarita Mayor Laurene Weste - weren't informed in advance and are none too happy. The structure served as Newhall's K-8 school from about 1914 to 1928, after which time it was a private home. It sold in April to Kansas Street Partners LLC, whose agent is listed as James S. Backer, a local developer. Had preservationists known, Weste said, they would have tried to work with the owner to move the building to Heritage Junction-Hart Park, where they've saved several other structures.
