New Old Stuff: Tragedy at St. Francis The
other day we showed you a baby book with ties to local people and
events of the 1920s, including the St. Francis Dam. One thing led to
another and now, researcher Tricia Putnam came up with the rest of the
"personal" dam story. Turns out, the baby's aunt was living in the
Powerhouse 2 community just below the dam in San Francisquito Canyon (7
miles north of Copper Hill) with her husband (the assistant damkeeper)
and their 4-year-old son when the dam broke March 12, 1928. The husband
and son's bodies were found the next day. The aunt's body didn't turn up
until a month later when it was found under 15 feet of sand in Saticoy.
The floodwaters had carried it nearly 50 miles. |
