Op-Ed: Just Say 'No' to Legalization
Commentary by Sens. George and Sharon Runner At
the same time big-government liberals are proposing banning everything
from Big Gulp sodas to Happy Meals, they are hypocritically leading
the charge for legalizing marijuana - a substance that contains more
than 400 chemicals including the psychoactive tetrahydrocannabinol
(THC). COMMENTARY |
At Least They're Not Spineless | Dianne Erskine-Hellrigel Before
removing debris to replenish the aquifer in bone-dry Bouquet Canyon,
the Forest Service says a NEPA study must be done to determine whether
there are endangered species, specifically unarmored threespine
stickleback, in the creek. I find it interesting that Bouquet Canyon is
not in a designated Significant Ecological Area. Could it be there are
no sticklebacks there? COMMENTARY |
Op-Ed: SCV Sunday | Darryl ManzerI
am enthused about the Mentryville project. I am not feeling the same
about Cemex, high-speed rail or The Dump. Maybe that is because
Mentryville will add something to our valley. The other three tell
folks we want them to pass through at high speed so they can't see the
dust or smell the chemical waste. COMMENTARY |

New Old Stuff: Castaic Range War Revisited |
Two different railroads' overlapping land rights in Castaic would pit
two angry old men - Bill Jenkins, left, and William Chormicle, center -
against each other in a feud that lasted a quarter-century and cost more
than 20 lives. The bloodshed started when Chormicle ambushed Dolores
Cook (right), who was working as a ranch hand for Jenkins. Cook was
riding along in his buggy on the disputed property when Chormicle opened
fire from a cabin, hitting him in the neck. Cook succumbed to his
wounds three hours later. According to the coroner's inquest and the
only eyewitness, Cook was unarmed at the time. Chormicle's 18-day murder
trial was one of the longest in L.A. County history. It took the jury
just 20 minutes to reach a verdict: self-defense. It was 1890 and Cook
was Native American. |
