Op-Ed: Facebook Fantasies | Darryl Manzer Wouldn't
it be great if the folks who started the billboard mess would hold
themselves to the same level of openness they say they want from the
city? Won't happen. They simply want to yell and stir the pot that is
made of a thin broth of innuendo, conjecture, conspiracy theory and
hatred. They lost Game 1 and are working on Game 2. Maybe they should
take the ball and go home. COMMENTARY |
Today in SCV History: September 9, 1938 | U.S. Rep. Howard "Buck" McKeon, Santa Clarita's first mayor, born in Tujunga/Los Angeles.
|
New Old Stuff: One Valley, One City |
When Buck McKeon became Santa Clarita's first mayor in 1987, the new
city encompassed less than half of the territory originally intended.
L.A. County's Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCO) allowed owners
of large swaths of raw land to opt out - places that later became
Stevenson Ranch, Valencia Westridge, Tesoro Del Valle and Fair Oaks
Ranch. Since that time, as new subdivisions have been built in the
unincorporated county area, new residents have opted in. Since 1987, the
city has expanded from 39.5 square miles to 57.9 - inching ever closer
to the 90 square miles shown on this original cityhood boundary map.
