College
of the Canyons' first students received their first classroom
instruction 45 years ago today, Sept. 22, 1969, in temporary quarters on
the campus of Hart High School. Classes started at 4 p.m., after the
kids had gone home for the day.
By
the end of COC's fifth academic year, Gov. Ronald Reagan had dedicated
the college's first permanent, multistory building on a piece of land in
Valencia ... and before long, Hart was coming to COC to play football.
From
735 students the first semester to more than 31,000 now, COC has evolved
into a cutting-edge academic institution with two campuses, a University
Center offering dozens of bachelor's and master's degree programs, a
regional Performing Arts Center, numerous business and industry
partners, and a Culinary Arts Center and more on the way.
Today
at noon, current and former COC students are invited to gather at the
flag pole in the middle of the Valencia campus for a special birthday
celebration to mark 45 years of service to the Santa Clarita Valley.
We understand there will be cake.
