military families, there will always be that empty space in our homes
and more importantly in our hearts for those that have made the ultimate
sacrifice," said City Councilman Dante Acosta whose son, Army Spc. Rudy
A. Acosta, was killed in Afghanistan in 2011. |

Op-Ed: From Infamy to Victory | Darryl ManzerMaybe
today is a day to remember as much as we remember the day before. Dec.
7, 1941, was a military defeat. Dec. 8, 1941, was the first day of
victory. A small part of the victory started right here in the SCV. A
day that looked much like today. Cool temps and broken clouds with a
bright blue sky. COMMENTARY |

New Old Stuff: William S. Hart's Stalker This
is a reminder that the word "fan" derives from "fanatic." Long story
short: Boston schoolteacher meets Bill Hart for dinner in L.A. in 1916
... with Bill's sister as chaperone. Woman returns to Boston, finds a
mother (shown) who gave birth to a son (shown) in 1917. Buys the
boy from Mom who put him up for private adoption. Returns to California
and tells Bill the boy is her son, and guess who's the dad. In 1923 she
confesses to the "frame-up." Why'd she do it? Not for money. For his
attention. He ignored her love letters and spurned her when he went to
Boston in 1917 to promote war bonds. "He would not see me and I wanted
to force him to see me. That is the reason," the woman said. The photo
shows the boy at age 6, back home with his birth mother after the ruse
finally blew up. But that's not the end of the story. There's a Part 2
... sixteen years later. We'll save that for another day.
