Santa Clarita Has a New Mayor

Councilman Bob Kellar handed the mayor's gavel to Councilwoman Laurene Weste on Tuesday as his year at the center of the dias drew to a close. It is Weste's fourth time to serve as mayor, matching a record set by Jo Anne Darcy. (Kellar, Frank Ferry and Jan Heidt each served as mayor three times.) Councilwoman Marsha McLean is the new mayor pro tempore.

Valencia Mall Wants Its Baby Jesus Back

 

The manger is empty at the Westfield Valencia Town Center, where somebody made off with the baby Jesus figurine from the mall's nativity scene. Bring it back and all will be forgiven, no questions asked ... just like the last time it happened.  

 

Jenkins Take the Helm of COC Board

The city says "mayor," COC says "president." It means the same thing: chairman of the board. Michele Jenkins has been named president of the SCV's community college board for 2014 - her eighth time to serve in that capacity. Bruce Fortine, who was elected to the original COC board in 1967, is the incoming vice president.

If you thought Acton resident and animal sanctuary operator Tippi Hedren's affinity for big cats was somehow rooted in revenge on birds, think again. According to the Dec. 4, 1962, edition of Look magazine - published prior to the 1963 release of her first Alfred Hitchcock film, "The Birds," but after the harrowing scenes were shot in which the crew threw real birds at her - she accepted one of the clever creatures as a pet.
