New Old Stuff: 1930s Tourist Trap | 
Ever wonder about the rock archway on Sierra Highway just south of
Eternal Valley Cemetery? Erected in the 1930s, it was the entry to John
Olmstead's "Live Oak Manor Cacti Gardens," where the retired L.A.
contractor sold cactus plants to passers-by and displayed weirdly shaped
rocks that he found in the desert. The place shut down due to loss of
vehicular access after the state removed the Newhall auto tunnel and
widened the highway in 1938. |
