Governor Signs Smyth's AB 1278 (Human Trafficking)
SACRAMENTO Governor Schwarzenegger signed Assembly Bill 1278 on August 4th, authored by Assemblyman Cameron Smyth (R-Santa Clarita). AB 1278 is a bi-partisan measure (joint authored by Assemblymembers Fiona Ma and Sally Lieber) which will help crack down on human trafficking.
"I am very pleased to be able to put partisan politics aside and work with my Democratic colleagues to help tackle this important issue," said Smyth. "This legislation will give law enforcement the resources it needs to combat human trafficking."
AB 1278 will allow district attorneys to charge human traffickers, who organize a single scheme with multiple offenses that cross jurisdictions, for all of the offenses in the multiple jurisdictions so long as one of the crimes occurs in one of their jurisdictions. This allows district attorneys to better work together to target and dismantle large cells of organized crime and human traffickers.
"Human trafficking is one of the lowest forms of criminal activity, and although more needs to be done, this bill is a good start."
