Organization: Assemblyman Cameron Smyth
Date: December 1, 2008
Republican Leader Villines Names Cameron Smyth as Republican Caucus Chair
Southern California Legislator Chosen for Strong Leadership Skills
SACRAMENTO — Assembly Republican Leader Mike Villines, of Fresno, today announced that he has appointed Assemblyman Cameron Smyth, of Santa Clarita, to serve as the next Republican Caucus Chair. Smyth replaces Bob Huff, who was elected to the State Senate.
"Since he arrived in Sacramento two years ago, Cameron Smyth has been a strong leader for Assembly Republicans and an effective representative for his constituents," Villines said. "With a proven track record of successful conservative leadership, he was a natural choice to become the new Republican Caucus Chairman. I look forward to working closely with Cameron as we lead a united Republican in protecting Californians from higher taxes and reckless spending."
The Republican Caucus Chair is the second-highest ranking Republican in the State Assembly. An integral part of the Assembly Republican leadership team, the Caucus Chair assists the Leader in advancing the Republican policy agenda, and achieving the Caucus' political goals. Additionally, the Caucus Chair regularly communicates with Republican leaders throughout California on key legislative issues and party matters.
First elected in 2006 to represent the 38th Assembly District, Smyth has served as vice-chair of the Assembly Environmental Safety and Toxic Materials Committee. He also served as co-chair of the Republican E3 Task Force, developing legislation that balances environmental stewardship with the increasing demands for energy while promoting a robust business climate.
Responding to the outrage when proclaimed pedophile Jack McClellan moved into his district, Assemblyman Smyth garnered national headlines for his leadership to protect Californians from online sex offenders lurking in their communities. He brought Democrats and Republicans together to author the Surrogate Stalker Act to give law enforcement greater tools to keep families safe from these dangerous individuals.
Prior to his election, he served as both mayor and councilman for the City of Santa Clarita. Smyth is a graduate of the University of California, Davis, where he was a two-sport athlete. He and his wife, Lena, have two children.
"I am honored to have been chosen by Republican Leader Villines to serve as the new Republican Caucus Chairman, and will work very hard to uphold the confidence that has been shown in me," said Smyth. "I know that there are many difficult challenges facing our state and our party in the months ahead. I stand ready to lead alongside my Assembly Republican colleagues as we fight to stop costly tax increases, repair our broken budget system, put jobs first, and build a stronger California."
