SCV Senior Center Offers Free Flu Shots
On Friday, November 14, the SCV Senior Center will offer FREE FLU SHOTS administered by the County of Los Angeles Dept. of Public Health. The Flu Clinic will run from 9 to 11 a.m. It is highly recommended that the following high-risk people receive the flu shot annually:
• Adults and children 6 months and older with chronic heart or lung conditions (including asthma), with a metabolic disease (such as diabetes), chronic kidney disease, weakened immune system, conditions that compromise respiratory function (hard to swallow), seizure disorder or other nerve or muscle disorders and on chronic aspirin therapy.
• Women who will be pregnant during the flu season.
• Household contacts and out-of-home caregivers of children under 5 years, especially of children less than 6 months of age, and adults 50 years and older.
• Healthcare workers.
Vaccination with the nasal-spray flu vaccine is also an option for healthy people 2-49 years (those of child-bearing age should not be pregnant).
Some people should NOT have the flu shot without consulting their physician first. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, that group includes people who:
• Have a severe allergy to chicken eggs.
• Have had a severe reaction to an influenza vaccination.
• Developed Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) within six weeks of getting an influenza vaccine.
• Have a moderate-to-severe illness with a fever within past week (they should wait until they recover to get vaccinated).
• Also includes children less than 6 months of age (influenza vaccine is not approved for this age group).
Persons seeking vaccine must show proof of eligibility such as a driver's license, prescription bottle related to their chronic illness, or a doctor's note.
Also, volunteers are still needed for the Nov. 14 flu clinic. If interested in helping, please see Diana Sevanian, Health & Wellness Coordinator, for further information or call 255-1588 ext. 150.
