New Old Stuff: History Built to Suit
| Placerita
landowner Frank Walker was one of the first to say Francisco Lopez
discovered gold on his property when, in 1930, Walker wanted a hook to
attract tourists to his "gold camp." Walker even claimed to have found a
rockpile left by Lopez to mark the spot, and folks seemed to believe
it. But a decade and a half later, when local historians wanted to
preserve the purported discovery site as a state park, Walker changed
his tune and insisted Lopez discovered gold anywhere other than
on his property. It took another 10 years for Walker and the state
finally to come to terms and create the park as we know it today. (1959
dedication ceremony shown here with Sheriff Eugene Biscailuz and
attorney Paul Palmer, Paula's dad.) If the story has a ring of
familiarity, it's because history repeats. |
