Nationally Known Legal Expert on Death Penalty to Speak in Santa Clarita August 14
SANTA CLARITA, CA (07 August 2008) The Movies-to-Talk-About movie on Thursday August 14th at 6:30 pm is "Deadline." What if you were the Governor of a state where a number of death row inmates were inadvertently proven innocent by journalism students doing a class project? What if you had evidence that many of the 167 prisoners on death row may have had similarly deficient representation, yet you had a reputation to protect as being one of the leaders who brought the death penalty back to the state in the first place? And what if you were about to leave office and had a hard deadline to make a decision? Republican Illinois Gov. George Ryan faced this exact dilemma. This stirring documentary, presented as an unfolding mystery, highlights his actions and decisions, underscoring the real questions he had to face from both sides of the capital punishment debate.
Stephen Rohde, constitutional lawyer, lecturer, writer and political activist will speak after the movie. Mr. Rohde is a former President of the ACLU of Southern California and the Beverly Hills Bar Association, a Vice President of Death Penalty Focus, Regional Chair of Progressive Jewish Alliance and is a founder of Interfaith Communities United for Justice and Peace.
He is the author of American Words of Freedom, which explores the origins, history and meaning of the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights. His most recent book is Freedom of Assembly which is part of the American Rights Series. He is also co-author of Foundations of Freedom published by the Constitutional Rights Foundation and has written numerous articles and book reviews on civil liberties and constitutional history. Mr. Rohde has represented two inmates on California's death row, including Stanley Tookie Williams in his clemency petition.
